Abergavenny Junction railway station served the town of Abergavenny in Monmouthshire. At the junction of lines run by two different railway companies, the station was moved 500 yards north within eight years of opening.

History

Opened by the West Midland Railway, the station became the GWR / LNWR border when the latter took over the Merthyr Tredegar and Abergavenny Railway for financial reasons and to expand into Wales. Therefore it became a partly London, Midland and Scottish Railway and Great Western Railway station during the Grouping of 1923. Passing on to the Western Region of British Railways on nationalisation in 1948, it was then closed by the British Transport Commission.

The site today

The station was sited near the point where the Beacons Way footpath crosses the A465 road. Trains on the former Newport, Abergavenny and Hereford Railway, now known as the Welsh Marches Line, pass the site. Although the former Merthyr, Tredegar and Abergavenny Railway line closed, and has been partly built over, its route through the town and the shape of the triangular junction south of the station site can still be seen in aerial photographs.

Abergavenny railway station, to the south of the junction site, is still served by trains on the Welsh Marches Line.
